That Finnish song was totally lifted from a famous song in a 40-year-old Russian movie mixed with some typical gypsy melodies.

Montenegro, the Czech Republic, and Andorra have also withdrawn, btw. Montenegro I liked last year, but it's nice having one less Yugoslav bloc voter. The Czech Republic has only done Eurovision three times, and they never got the hang of it at all. And Andorra was often shafted in the semifinal round, and got sick of it. Plus they apparently don't have the budget for it anymore.

I'm watching the Iceland contest. Only six entries and what an odd mix they are... Basically one or two attempts to duplicate Iceland's second place song from last year, a few entries that are attempt's to duplicate Norway's winning song, and a few others that were a hair different.

I'm rooting for Je Ne Said Quoi, which means it won't win.

The Netherlands' entry was written by an old guy who wrote a once famous Smurf song. It was the only song written for our entry this year, and five acts had to battle it out for the honour of performing it at this year's competition. It gives me great pride and the need to vomit to present to you, our 1st round exit: Sieneke!

Dry, did you know that she was one of Yohanna's backup singers in Moscow last year?

I thought she looked familiar, but I couldn't place her. Thanks for the info.

FYI, she did much better when she performed it again at the end of the show after being declared the winner. She handled the key change MUCH better and actually got up to the high notes, unlike in this performance.

Now I'm off to watch the others you've posted. :)

I can't decide if I'm crazy about Armenia's selection or if I'm ultimately going to hate it. I think I'm going to end up loving it.

The chorus of Cyprus' song literally consists of only three or four vocal notes. And he does nothing at all with it until the final chorus.

My jaw fell to the floor on Denmark's song. That's going to be AWFULLY tough to beat!

I've already commented on Iceland's selection.

I had to cut off the The Netherlands' entry at :32. I had forgotten how awful that song is. We should send Mr. Koffie some flowers.

I LOVE Norway's song this year. His voice is so pure, very much like Yohanna's. But it's also substantially more shaky. I wonder if the nerves will get to him, especially with the weight of expectations of representing last year's winner. But so far, this is my #2 choice behind Denmark.

Poland's entry is very sexy in an twisted and uncomfortable sort of way. :)

::

Are key changes mandatory for Eurovision entries? LOL!

I'm disappointed with the number of ballads so far this year. Hopefully the other entries we haven't seen yet will pick up the tempo. It's funny how Iceland had success with a ballad last year and is this year going with a dance tune. Everyone else seems to be going the ballad route, following Iceland's lead from last year. At least Denmark and Norway have some energy.

::

I keep changing my mind about Armenia. LOL!

And where's the sleaze?

After seeing the Danish entry and the obvious immense difference in quality, I think we should be banned for the next three years, or something to that extent. Sieneke's version of a already crappy song is an embarrassment to a LOT of people over here. :(

I sort of understand asking Kartner to write a song, but I REALLY don't understand accepting that song once he wrote it. As a songwriter shouldn't he have a lot of other songs lying around? And if not, can't they just say "sorry, Kartner" and go ahead with something else if Ik Ben Verliefd is it?

LOL. I haven't posted Albania yet because they haven't translated their entry into English yet like they've announced they will , but there's is uptempo. Slovakia's heavy front runner is uptempo too, and I love it. Hopefully they both sleaze it up come showtime. You may understand it, but there was little appreciation of that choice over here. Not that Kartner is a bad guy or a bad songwriter, he's just from a completely different generation and he was the ONLY one they asked to write something. Choosing to fish from a shallow pool will limit the chances of landing a decent catch, eyh?

The sad truth is that they probably paid to be there. Of the different public networks we have over here, the TROS is the most into what we would call, ehm, pirate radio music. It's not exactly like German schlager music, but it seems related  Anyways, there's quite a market for it and this is what you get when you air the national songfestival on the TROS. As long as our songfestival stays on a public network, expect more crap from the Netherlands. Though surely not like this :lipsrsealed:

2010 Eurovision Song:

This song got announced out of NOWHERE. It was expected that Belarus was going to have several rounds of national selection, until this morning they just said this was their song and to hell with all the people who had been preparing to compete.

May get overturned. But for now, here it is! I hope it's the song, because it's pretty hot...

Melodifestivalen, the Swedish Eurovision selection series, is easily the most intense of any of them.

And the performance that won their second heat, Manboy, has definitely changed my life for ever.

Prepare to be blown away.

I really like the Georgian song (as far as annoying ballads go) and the singer's pretty, but she needs to put more voice into it. Or maybe the sound quality is just bad.

The Slovak song is apparently about a region of Slovakia called Horehronie, and about lying in a field there and staring into the sun. Eye damage could explain the wardrobe, I guess.

The glitter shorts I can't defend (and I can't imagine they'll make the final), but the plastic instruments are in response to the Lithuanian network not allowing instruments to be played on stage, so that was their protest of that rule.

I was really far behind, so I'm working on catching up:

I couldn't finish these: Georgia (booooooring, and then the sound didn't match the image); Latvia (and those girls washing clothes on stage: wth?); Spain (sorry, Jessie, and the choreography didn't help), Malta (the bird thing may be the worst thing I've ever seen in Eurovision); Albania (I had liked it at first, but they messed it up in the final version); Macedonia (completely forgettable, I don't even remember what I didn't like exactly)... I managed to finish Slovakia's, but wasn't impressed at all, and what's with the dancing?

Ok songs: Sweden (but it's not final, right?), Turkey (even though it kind of goes downhill after the first 20 seconds)...

How could "Manboy" (or as a not-so-impressed youtube comment suggested: Manwhore ;)) NOT have made the final? It was a sure top 3 finish, right? Cute, metrosexual looking singer, dancers, involuntarily (?) hilarious lyrics ("You can call me manboy...I show you how to love...there's no halo 'round my head" :hyst: ) and, AND there was a serious Flashdance moment. How could taking a shower/dancing in the rain on stage possibly be beaten by a boring ballade? Boo.

Here are the countries competing in the first semifinal, with my predicted qualifiers in bold:

Moldova - SunStroke Project & Olia Tira - Run away
Russia - Peter Nalitch & Friends - Lost and forgotten
Estonia - Malcolm Lincoln - Siren
Slovakia - Kristina - Horehronie
Finland - Kuunkuiskaajat - Työlki ellää
Latvia - Aisha - What for?
Serbia - Milan Stankovic - Ovo je Balkan
Bosnia Herzegovina - Vukašin Brajić - Thunder and lightning
Poland - Marcin Mroziński - Legenda
Belgium - Tom Dice - Me and my guitar
Malta - Thea Garrett - My dream
Albania - Juliana Pasha - It's all about you
Greece - Giorgos Alkaios & Friends - Opa
Portugal - Filipa Azevedo - Há dias assim
Macedonia - Gjoko Taneski - Jas ja imam silata
Belarus - Three Plus Two - Butterflies
Iceland - Hera - Je ne sais quoi

Anyone else have any ideas? This semi is so much weaker than the second, so it's pretty tough to call.

For a moment there, I thought perhaps all of Europe was pissed off at Iceland! LOL!

I don't understand Belarus at all. Great song. They just couldn't sing it. I mean, Randy Jackson would have gone into cardiac arrest from the pitchiness.

I also liked Portugal's song, but I could have thrown a rock through her forced vibrato. And she's going to have TMJ from shaking her jaw to match her loopy vibrato.

Russia, on the other hand... Loved the vocal. Great singer. Hated the song.

Why did Malta get shafted? Too much like Iceland's song from last year?

Serbia is going to grow on me as this thing unfolds.

Still, a very week night. When is the other semifinal?

I didn't know you guys had Eurovision thread here

Way too many non-descript ballads this year (does Malta ever send anything else? I feel it's a big girl with an ever bigger voice singing about love, peace and harmony every year? Meh...)
Massively disappointed in Nalitch, listening to "Guitar" on loop as we speak to erase that Eurovision hot mess of a song from my memory
Also Belarus? Really!? Thought that was most cringe-inducing performance of the night, especially when they dished out the wings
Portugal has fairly boring song as well, saved a bit by the cute singer and singing in Portuguese

Liked Iceland and Moldova, trashy Europop FTW!
Other notable moments-Bosnia with the least convincing faux-guitar playing in the history of music, Greek guy and his droogs hooting, Poland with awkward S&M moments and bizarre use of apples and, of course, Milan!

Hoping things pick up a bit in the second semi...

2010 Eurovision Song:

NKXPfyvQMo4

I followed the Swedish selection process closer than any other, and I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed with the end result. For me this is going to get lost in the sea of ballads, whereas Eric Saade, Salem Al Fakir, or Timoteij would have stood out much better.

People clearly see something in this, but I'm not one of them.

I quite like this, I must admit (for a Eurovision song, anyway) but what strikes me most about it is that it seems more Irish than the Irish entry - Anna looks Irish (the facial features if not the hair colour), sounds Irish and the song even has the phrase "misty moon" in it. Is there something we should know? LOL

2010 Eurovision Song:

8QSgNM9yNjo

Fun, and fairly unique in this field.
[/CENTER]

Crazy Lena and her unoique English accent - yay! :) She's actually very authentic singing Kate Nash's "Foundations" in her auditions (see http://www.unser-star-fuer-oslo.de/videos/player/index.html?contentId=60581&initialTab=related&showId=1451-01 - after the ad) with a "Mockney" accent but it seems to have crept into bits of "Satellite". LOL

I don't think she'll win without having been in the semis to give people a chance to get hooked, but I hope she does.

As for our (UK) entry, the last time I looked it was fav to come last (which is different from having the most outside chance of coming first - it's not at the bottom of the betting for 1st place) and if it does come last, for once we'll deserve it! :lipsrsealed:

Lena with her unique style was the early favorite, but the other candidates had strong performances as well. LOL turns out the Dutch entry (which is at least up tempo, a kind of jive) has at least one fan other than the artist's mum - Stefan Raab, who 'discovered' Lena Meyer-Landrut. The Dutch entry is listed as his fave (apart from Lena, I assume!) at http://www.stern.de/kultur/musik/eurovision-song-contest/eurovision-song-contest-in-oslo-stefan-raab-verraet-seine-favoriten-1569302.html#utm_source=standard&utm_medium=twitte r&utm_campaign=sternde

Then again, Raab was responsible for Wadde hadde dude da (which he even sung http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuXLcXn4l2k&feature=related), for Guildo hat euch Lieb (which he conducted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F821UDJH_-Q) and for composing the 2004 German entry http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x29c4d_2004-germany-final_music, which should tell you how good (or otherwise) his taste is - though I seem to remember the Brits scored them both high (they tend to like it when countries take the piss) and they are 3 of the 5 most successful German entries since 1995, which is a bit of a worry! :p

I'm not too fond of Belgium's, or Norway's for that matter. Can't say I really like any of the ones so far. Azerbaijan's the best of them IMO.

That Safura woman was hyped like it was a done deal  Not that I have a problem with that particular bandwagon crashing, total blah song and performance IMO...

Azerbaijan. Hmm, maybe she wasn't hyped that much elsewhere? I just learned her song was composed by a Serbian dude, so maybe it was a local thing (I'm from there)

some man jumped on stage during the first performance, which of course was a distraction, so they got to do it again.
