My fellow equestrians,

You are cordially invited to participate in the 2009 edition of TAT's Smarty Jones Stakes!

At the onset of this contest, we will give each participant $10,000 to spend as he or she sees fit. Bets will be placed by players before each of the three triple crown races, as soon as odds are posted. You may bet as little or as much of your money as you wish on each race, betting on as many or as few horses as you like.

A horse selected that wins will pay out in full. A horse that comes in second will pay out half, and a horse that comes in third will pay out a quarter. There will be no exactas or trifectas or any of that silliness.

We look forward to seeing all of you on the tracks, as this contest trots along.

Stay tuned for the specific details, but picks will be due before the start of the race on Saturday, May 2.

If you would like to start scouting your selections, feel free to visit http://www.kentuckyderby.com/2009/

If it's any consolation, she had a role in its evolution. ;)

But I'll refrain from Dumpsterizing this thread. :cheesy:

This contest is really differently structured from just about any other TAT contest, so if you wanna get a sense of how it works, check out last year's version of it :)

No, I mean when the race starts. The odds will fluxuate between now and then. The odds at post time (when the race starts) will be the final odds.

We'll update them as best we can, but the odds at the start of the race rule.

Okay, apart from the fact the my Uncle owned an Auckland Cup winner in 1977 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland_Cup) and New Zealand Cup winner in 1978 (http://www.tbheritage.com/TurfHallmarks/racecharts/NewZealand/NewZealandCup.html)and I drank cheap 'plonk' well underage (I was 12) from said cup, is the $10000 the amount I have to spend on this race or on all races..

You can bet all of it or some of it... That's up to you. That's the risk you take. Of course, whatever you earn in winnings, if anything, is what you have for the Preakness Stakes, along with what you didn't spend this week.

I just tuned in for ESPN's coverage of the early races. Did anyone see that race Informed Decision just ran? She got blocked out three times with nowhere to go; had to start and stop, start and stop, start and stop... And then she finally found a hole and just completely burst through it! What a race!

Okay, so it's 3:30pm central time and I've just turned on the computer about to log onto TAT, and my son comes to me and needs to go get his hair cut. So I decide to get that done before the barbershops close and run a few errands. I get back about 30 minutes ago and logon and receive a message from Dry (thanks, Dry :cheesy:). So I just now find out that I Want Revenge scratched from the race. So this means that my $2500 is lost? :(

The distance for the Belmont should work out nicely for Mine That Bird. The Preakness was just a hair too short for him. But the Belmont distance is pretty ideal.

And the Belmont field usually only has about 7 or 8 horses at most... Slimmer pickin's! Which is not good for those of us who are behind. :(

I missed the contest. But I just wanted to comment on how much fun I'm having watching the races this year. There was a 6 week series on Animal Planet called "Jockeys" that I watched. One of the featured jockeys was Mike Smith, who was in both races. Also yesterday they mentioned his girlfriend, Chantal Sutherland. She was one of the jockeys featured in the series. Another one was Joe Talamo. He's new, only 17 or 18. He had a ride in the Derby but the horse was scratched the morning of the race. Revenge something? Anyway, watching the series added a little spice to the races this year. I only watch the Triple Crown races, but I am a huge fan of Dick Francis novels.

I got hooked on horseracing as a young child. I was 8 years old when Seattle Slew won the triple crown and 9 years old during the famed Affirmed/Allydar duel (anyone who hasn't watched their races in the Triple Crown Series in 78 should watch them on YouTube... In order... The Derby, then the Preakness and then the Belmont... The Belmont race alone was one of the most spectacular, and most heartbreaking, events in sport... Allydar was SO close... Greatest rivalry EVER in sport in my book... Chrissie and Martina got NOTHING on those two horses...).

Anyway, I've been completely hooked ever since. :)

And Allydar ended up being the FAR superior sire. So he really won in the end. :)

P.S.--Seriously, seriously, seriously... EVERYONE must watch those three races on YouTube. I think I also posted the links in last year's Smarty Jones Stakes contest thread.

I agree 100%. Mine that Bird seems like the pick!

No, you didn't! I just went through the thread and didn't see the links posted. You did mention there that they were on youtube. So everyone head there to see them (like me) if you already haven't!

I agree 100%. Mine that Bird seems like the pick!

The only problem is that other strong closers tend to come out of the woodwork... They like to skip the Derby and the Preakness and gear up for the Belmont... I'm anxious to see the field for this one.

I agree some years they do come out of nowhere but many times they've been right in front of us the whole time too. Mine that Bird definitely looked like it could've won the Belmont yesterday.

These videos are fairly poor quality, but they're worth it! Especially the last two! And especially the last one! Pure guts from both athletes!!!

Kentucky Derby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65V3xFLPNLA

Preakness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2JWpDkf7m8

Belmont: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZmaqszF4GA

When you think that we haven't had a triple crown winner since 78... And the way Affirmed had to do it... And how valiantly Alydar fought... He was SOOOOOO close!

Just three of sport's great moments... Especially the last two... And if only Alydar hadn't always had to do his work so far out on the track... Jockey error? Who knows.

But again, Alydar was by far the superior sire... Yes, I'm a HUGE Alydar fan and root for anything that has him in its pedigree. :)

As a small child, I watched Alydar lose each race. After the third one, I cried so hard. I was so upset for Alydar. My mother had to come to sit on the couch with me and give me a hug... And her prophetic soul... "Maybe he'll be the better daddy!" And she was right. :)

I hope Dunkirk shows up at the Belmont...

I'm ready for General Quarters to stay home.

Cool videos Dry. Especially Belmont, haven't ever seen a race like that one!

Did Belmont only have 5 horses?

That year, yes. It's traditionally a small field. Seven or eight horses usually. Which is part of the reason why the fact that we haven't had a Triple Crown winner since 78 is just a hair astounding. Especially give the number or horses in recent years that came into the Belmont with the Derby and the Preakness under their belts.... But the Belmont distance is such a game changer....

I'm glad you enjoyed the vids... :) I watch them pretty regularly. But stupid me, I keep hoping the outcome will change. :cheesy:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will not run in the Belmont Stakes, opening the way for jockey Calvin Borel to return to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in his quest for a personal Triple Crown.

Jess Jackson, Rachel Alexandra's co-owner, said Friday the spectacular filly "deserves a well-earned vacation."

$3760 on MR. Hot Stuff! Edited below!

(Yes I'm going by the name that sticks out to me...I had a hot stuff for supper last night. Laugh if you want, but it would've worked well for me last year to pick Da'Tara since my wife's name is Tara!)

SO SAD I can't waste the rest of my money on Friesan Fire. Should know better about Derby favorites.

The final odds for the Belmont Stakes (Looked on the official site and they weren't there, so I'm using a random site: horseraceinsider.com):

Position 3: Mr. Hot Stuff: 15-1
Position 4: Summer Bird: 12-1
Position 5: Luv Gov: 20-1

On si.com they teased them announcing the winner of Belmont would be the son of Birdstone...but not Mine That Bird. And they were right ... wow. Shoulda listened.

Wonder if "half-brothers" have ever finished 1-2 before?

Redemption for Desormeaux!

It's now official: Win: Summer Bird, Place: Dunkirk, Show: Mine That Bird

This means waylandboy-tw is our winner, coming from WAY behind to take the contest! By picking Summer Bird with 1600, he multiplied his money by 12 to get to 19200. Gracie lost a little bit of money in the Belmont Stakes, and ended up in 2nd with 15800. Tscott415 came in 3rd with 10000 after missing the Belmont Stakes entirely.

Congrats waylandboy-tw! :wavey::notworthy:

Probably not, so you get an assist for that! I wanted a 12-1 or higher odds to take a shot on. It was between those two but I didn't see you had already taken Mr. Hot Stuff until later. Thanks!

Congrats to wayland on a brilliant comeback!

I probably would have bet everything on Dunkirk, since I'm a sucker for the greys... It still probably wouldn't have been enough, though.
