BOAO, China – Action star Jackie Chan said Saturday he's not sure if a free society is a good thing for China and that he's starting to think "we Chinese need to be controlled."

Chan's comments drew applause from a predominantly Chinese audience of business leaders in China's southern island province of Hainan.

The 55-year-old Hong Kong actor was participating in a panel at the annual Boao Forum when he was asked to discuss censorship and restrictions on filmmakers in China. He expanded his comments to include society.
"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said. "I'm really confused now. If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic."

Chan added: "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."
(...)

The action hero complained that Chinese goods still have too many quality problems. He became emotional when discussing contaminated milk powder that sickened tens of thousands of Chinese babies in the past year.

Speaking fast with his voice rising, Chan said, "If I need to buy a TV, I'll definitely buy a Japanese TV. A Chinese TV might explode."

Spoken as a person that been thoroughly controlled all his life.
How easy to give opinions on policies that will never, ever affect you.

It is probably the view of many upper class Chinese in that country. That is why I don't buy into the so-called socialist/communist state. As long as there are human beings, there will be a heirarchy with the people in the higher classes having separate rules applied to them while making sure there are control at on the masses.

This is one of those situations where I can only assume that I'm overdue for some cultural training. Because I just don't get it.

It is the view of many Chinese I have spoken with while in USA.

Socialist states have heirarchy too and comunist states have never existed.

am so befuddled by this! like saying the chinese are a different species, while freedom may work in other nations, genetically the chinese need guidance, to be controlled. did i misunderstand him? interesting to find out how much control chan has allowed the state in his life and career.

The gist of my point is this. These "socialistic" governments always brag about they are better for society than capitalist ones, because the wealth is "distributed." But it truly never was that way. I have Russian friends who were raised up under the former Soviet Union. They stated that the socialistic ideal is just that... an ideal. There was a small elite that had all the priviledges they can muster and the masses struggled with the crumbs that were left over. Life was not good for the masses at all. And China is probably not far from the same mark.

I would fathom that it is probably WORSE, especially in the countryside where AIDS is killing the masses like flies with the wonderful "socialistic" government looking the other way.
