Since the contest covers tournaments all around the world, where better to wait between flights to our next destination than the VIP Lounge.

While here feel free to talk about your 12-woman team... Drink off a shameful selection... Talk trash about your team (but not TOO much )... Interact with other contest participants...

And remember, the juke box from hell will travel to each tournament site, so don't forget to use it!

We will also be having a Duty Free Armory so you can purchase all sorts of "incentives" for the players on your team!

Have fun!

I did some quick tabulations of how many times each player was picked and listed them below. I counted 35 teams. There is nothing official about my count in case I missed something!

A
Zvonareva, Wozniacki-27 (Clearly the popular strategy)
Serena-20
Jankovic-13
Dementieva-10
Azarenka-3
Cornet-2
Pennetta, Ivanovic, Radwanska-1

B
Cibulkova-29 (All but 6 teams have her)
Kleybanova-11
Bammer-9
Suarez Navarro, Errani, Kirilenko-8
Kanepi- 7
Li-6
AMG, Mauresmo, Bondarenko-3
Srebotnik, Peng, Benesova-2
Sugiyama, Wozniak, Hantuchova, Schiavone-1

C
Peer-22 (We love our 7 seed!)
Dulko-21 (Many looking ahead to the clay)
Safarova-17
Tanasugarn, Pironkova, Rybarikova-6
Kvitova-5
Dechy, Llagostera Vives-3
Garbin, Makarova, Lisicki, Zakopalova-2
Pavlyuchenkova, Bondarenko, Keothavong, Razzano, Bacsinszky, Amanmuradova, Groenefeld, Kudryavtseva-1

D
Dokic-21 (Seems like a lot for someone who has a wild card into qualifying next week)
Craybas-16
Vaidisova, Paszek-12
Dushevina, Voskovoeva-6
Gajdosova/Groth, Zahlavova Strycova-5
Coin, Cetkovska-4
Gallovits-3
Arvidsson, Dominguez Lino, Rezai-2
Wickmayer, Vinci, Bremond, Vesnina, Shvedova-1

Since no one "Forgot Paris" I'll only mention that two people (oploskoffie and mjschaefer)nearly forgot Pattaya certainly taking the strategy of looking ahead and only choosing Peer as their lone representative in Thailand.

Respectively submitted,
waylandboy

Just saw the results, Madame. I'm happy too (for Around the World), because there are only six of us with Rybarikova, so happy to lose Wozniacki. I just realized now that I also had both sides of another quarter in Pattaya. Too bad Peng didn't take down Vera. And I thought Tanasugarn would have pulled out another win at home, although it's nice to see Sania winning again.

Semi-final preview. Sania Mirza also made it but was unavailable to pick. Oploskoffie and Shtexas lead with 5 correct semi-finalists.

A
Zvonareva- 27
Serena- 20
Jankovic- 13
Dementieva- 10

B
Mauresmo- 3

C
Peer- 22
Rybarikova- 6

Oploskoffie in very impressive fashion is the only one who got all four Paris semi-finalists plus also has Peer alive in Pattaya.

Shtexas is assured of one finalist and is the only person who can still get all four finalists correct.

The Zvonareva-Peer match is a big one tomorrow since neither of them have Vera and most everyone else does.

Martini4me
02-13-2009, 01:13 PM
Thanks for the analysis, waylandboy.

For those playing along at home, that makes 148 quarter-final picks and 101 semi-final picks correct. With 35 contestants, that's an average of 4.2 quarter-finalists and 2.9 semi-finalists per person, so you can confirm how well or poorly you're doing against the rest.

Just a quick mid-week update. Congrats to Drop-shot for having 7 players still alive this week which includes a well diversified portfolio with at least 2 in each tournament. Tennisanyone74 who is one of five people who have 6 players left is the only team out of the 35 who could have all six finalists.

MysterX is the only player in the top 12 week 1 scores who has even 5 players remaining so there could be a major shakeup in the standings soon.

On the trade front, Moose has had the best fortune with having traded Cornet, Bammer, and Amanmuradova for Azarenka, Suarez Navarro, and Dulko. Great job!

While many have experienced misfortune in the trade department, evil juju has had the largest dose unfortunately having traded Serena, Zvonareva, and Cibulkova for Safina, Pennetta, and Mauresmo.

Good luck to all the rest of the week!

Trade summary and week 3 preview

There were 44 trades this week bringing the trade total to 103. (There ended up being 59 in week 1 as I overlooked Fiercehart’s when I posted last week). 37 potential moves still remain by the field. Twelve players have used all of their trades. Only three players (PeterSkan, mjschaefer, and oohsalmon) have yet to make a trade and with oohsalmon having the highest score of the three so far.

Here are the week 3 additions. It will be interesting to see how the last couple of weeks play out with those who have used up their trades versus those waiting for Monterrey. Of the top ten scores, three have used up all their trades, five have 1 left, and two have 2 left. Good luck to all!

Nearly every player, including all the leaders have Pennetta so she’s basically a non-factor, win or lose. Interestingly, MysterX (1st), Drop-shot (4th), and Deuce (8th) all saved one trade and did not choose Venus so her results could have the most impact on the standings this week.
A

Here are a few more stats to pass along. Mwoods has the most people starting the week in the draw with 9. With Craybas and Dominguez Lino losing tonight, the only four active players even picked by others that are not on his team are Zakopalova, Llagostera Vives, Gallovits, and Cetkovska. Mwoods is also one of two players who had Garbin, and the only one with Vinci, both winners tonight. It seems likely Mwoods will be the week's high scorer but as promised I will let Dry officiate that 6-7 days from now:)

Miles started the week with 8. Six others started with 7 players including top ten scorers Drop-shot, TennisAnyone74, TScott, and ptmcmahon. TScott and ptmcmahon have the same 7 players so they're guaranteed the same week 3 outcome.

Winston and PeterSkan had the fewest in the draw with 1 (Craybas) and with her losing tonight they can rest up for Monterrey.

Don't look now, but Flavia won a match.

Not that it matters much since everyone and their dog has her on their team...

Exactly. She could have made us more of a difference last week, but nooooooooooo

Wished Flavia would have done that in Bogota. However, at least she won.

I see Venus is blogging on the WTA site this week. Since Date Krumm did it too weeks ago in Pattaya and lost round 1, Pennetta from Bogota and lost round 1, will Venus make it a threepeat?

I'm telling you, she needs Venus in the draw. It changes everything.

Oh, stop... :o

Don't stop...

;)

Congrats on being one of two to get all four semi-finalists. This now assures you of the top week 3 score and you will soar up the rankings for sure when the dust settles. Fiercehart and e11even are the only two from the overall top 10 scores who got three right.

All week I debated if I should trade for Venus or Benesova...shoulda done both I guess! Both my trades next week better make the semis at least!

I didn't take Venus cause I was confident she would retire. Specially after winning half way around the world.
Now I'm left with hoping Barbora Whats-her-name beats her today.

Still may get your wish on Venus retiring. She does have a "match" to play on Monday.

Ooh, just saw this! Thanks!

Now if only it'd been a Zahlovova Strycova/Benesova final... ;)

My B-listers have killed me (and probably others) so far. 2 total from Kirilenko so far, 15 from Domi + a withdrawl, and 30 from CSN, but now she's out next week too. That's 47 total for the three. A lot of wishing we'd taken Amelia over any of our other B picks.

CSN totally screwed me. She was my worst trade. Did absolutely nothing.
Dokic was my fault for buying into the hype.

Well, last week of the Around the World contest. Most including myself are out of the medal race as there are only 6 people you have the points and the players left to be in the running. A 7th person has a small outside chance.

The top three from last week look strong but it appears Bartoli will be the make or break player this week as none of them have her but the three most serious chasers all do. If she goes to the finals there will probably be a change in the standings, otherwise the top three will be hard to catch.

All the contenders have Radwanska, Pennetta, Safarova, and Dulko so those will all cancel out.

You had your chance a couple weeks ago to follow the WTA's lead and award yourself and the other Peer pickers some points. :cheesy:

Unfortunately your sympathy towards your Dubai buddies got the best of you and you're on the outside looking in this week.

Shoulda taken Zheng instead of Aggie. As it is, Gallovits or Bartoli winning the title could get me very close to top 3.

Stupid Aggie...I knew this would happen!

Go Bartoli-Kirilenko final!

I Hate Fantasy Tennis

Welcome to the club. It's been over a year since I finished in the top three in a fantasy contest. I'm becoming increasingly frustrated.

And I just did the math, and there is NO WAY that I'll be top three this time around either.

Bring on the clay.

Does having Na Li in the semis mean there's a remote chance I might get out of last place?

If I had used my trade for Zheng instead of Radwanska, I would've medaled. Second time in four months I made my last decision of a contest wrong and cost myself a medal.

By my calculations, all three spots are still up in the air. Two have clinched medals and Bartoli wining or losing will determine the third. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are all yet to be decided until the completion of today's match.

I am such a fool, I did not realise that last week was the last time for trading and here I was saving my final two trades for IW. As a result I will receive a big fat ZERO.
