Here, we keep track of all the picks of the 279 contestants (289 less 8 who chose Ferrero, who withdrew, 1 who chose Fish, who does not play Monday, and 1 who chose Karlovic, who also does not play Monday). If I got one wrong, let me know.

Once you're "red", you're "dead".

Gotta say I'm pretty impressed with the Nishikori pick against Monaco. Gutsy choice...and is paying off!

How could so many of you pick Rochus after what he did to me at Roland Garros?

So wait the those of us who picked Rochus totaled more than those who picked Soderling at Wimby? seems strange

A little uneasy is an understatement, wait... 5th set!!! still hope

279 to start.

That's a lot to lose after only 1 day. Especially when you consider how many we had deep into Wimbledon.

I got to see a bunch of the French guys practicing during qualies and was duly impressed. Monfils, Gasquet, Llondra, and Mathieu all looked great. Mathieu was giving Safin all kinds of fits and Gasquet's backhand was clicking. Of course, I'm going to pick one of them in a later round based on this and regret it all the way to the Loser's Lounge.

If Mardy loses today, we might be declaring our winner of the Mens game by the 3rd round.

With the Old 69 crew gone, we're down 60% from the number we started the game with, and we still have another day of the first Round.

One upside of the slaughter ... those that last even a few rounds should see their rankings go up! Woo hoo!

A complete reversal from Wimbledon.

Capdeville blows a two-sets-to-none lead but Reynolds just came back in the fifth set from a break down (and his opponent serving for the match) to keep them alive.

I sent you a private message a few minutes back. See private messages near the upper right. In short, we don't have day 1 picks for you. But, we love that you are here.

i just saw the private message and answered it. i found this page a bit late, but maybe i can still join in though starting day 2?

See private message #2.

It just wouldn't be fair to let you in officially since so many people lost day 1. Rochus took out 64 all by himself. We try to be consistent and as fair as can since we get linked to each pool. I hope you understand and stick around.

Shtexas,

Seeing as how many players have been eliminated by late withdrawals from ferrero and youzhny would you guys consider having a back-up choice? I.e., you choose an extra guy in case your main pick for the day gets injured. Just an idea....

This is something that the contest staff will take under consideration in the layoff between the USO and the AO. I don't necessarily think having a "backup" pick is the way to go (and that is a personal opinion, not the opinion of the entire staff, I want to clarify), since we're already inundated by so much data each SP that to have even more going on would seem a little glutted to me. But this Ferrero/Youzhny double has raised several questions on the site, which we will continue to talk about in the weeks and months to come.

I also want to add that I really sympathize with you all, as I was a Youzhny picker, but that is the game. I blame Youzhny's immune system, not the game.

I know I'm not Shtexas, but I would be opposed to this idea. I think what makes SP's so much fun is the absolute shocking manner in which we get knocked out. Sure it sucks to lose a player to a withdrawl, but thats part of the tricky nature of the game. He still could have started the match, then quit.

Just my opinion.

Precisely. It happens all the time. Like when Tommy Haas stepped on a ball and twisted his ankle during a warmup a few years back. He got the loss without playing a point.

This is the 12th major I have run the men's pool. There have been exactly 4 withdrawals where we lost participants as a result. Gasquet was a shock. Youzhny was a shock. Monfils at Wimbledon and Ferrero at this event were not. There was plenty of talk Monfils would withdraw from Wimbledon, and Ferrero has been out most of the summer. If Tsonga withdrew today, and a few have picked him, it would not be a shock either.
So, really, two shocks in 12 majors. I'm not sure we want to overreact and make the rules too complicated. But, we discuss all suggestions. We take them seriously.

He was another who was questionable.
My thoughts exactly, which is why I bypassed him despite the initial temptation - and not only because of doubts over his physical condition. While the fact that he seems to get medical treatment in virtually every match I see him play (including the recent Olympics) was a key factor, the other drawback against Tipsy IMO is that, while he usually gets up mentally for big matches against higher ranked players, the Serb also seems prone to losses against those he should beat on paper.

My 'no seed in the first round' rule has worked this time as I have thankfully survived (after a dismal RG and Wimby), but I'm still following your 'top 14 only' strategy with keen interest...

Point taken, although I'd counter that a bandwagon pick has as much to do with the clear 'obviousness' (is that a word?) of the pick as with how many people made it before you ;) Normally it's not an issue for me either, especially in the first round with my 'no seeds' policy, but I'm definitely playing it a little safer this time around after a mostly abysmal year SP-wise... So instead of going with 20-something seeds in the second round, for instance, I went with solid teens.

With Wawrinka down 5-7, 6-7, 3-3, I decided to pay a visit to his match with some reinforcements. :bat:

I politely explained to Stan "Zbornak" Wawrinka that there was more riding on his win than just a spot in the 4R of the US Open; that I, and several other folks, needed him to turn things around... or else... :gun:

Fortunately, he listened to reason, and swept 15 of the last 20 games. :cheesy:

Updates threads are overrated anyway. I mean, all of us multiple medal winners know the only real accomplishment is an all out win.

I went with Monfils even though Del Potro was the safer pick.

P.S. At least I made it to the second week for the first time in ages and, if I had not decided to shift away from my 'better safe than sorry' strategy of the last couple of rounds, would have made it to the updated thread. Thanks to all the TAT staff for another great contest and I plan to be back again next year
