My Gawd it's busy around this board. Closing out our Olympic game. Opening up our 4th annual USOSP. 20 Questions, and You Can't Win Jack, and SkanCan and Racquet Bracket. Trying to keep up on tennis on top of all that! Heck, I need a drink. Which makes it a perfect time to unlock the doors, turn on the lights, and open up our USO Suicide Pool Losers Lounge!

Sit down, and have yourself an ice cold Budweiser, the cold one from the States, in honor of the States' Slam. What's that you say, a Euro conglomorate bought Bud? Guess we'll be serving Pabst Blue Ribbon this time around.

Remember, if you lose in one of the games, you are officially half-cheeked. When you are out in both the mens and ladies games you are double cheeked.

We have Jessie our staff bartender serving up the tastiest libations on the internet. We have the Jukebox From Hell, spinning those all time classics that you'd just as soon forget. And we have the LL Dartboard, waiting for you to stick someone's ATP or WTA profile pic on the bullseye, and have all of us take aim.

And if I know TAT, someone will be posting a note from our favorite waitress sometime before play starts tomorrow

Also, TAT has Battle of the Boards happening.

And in honor of the USO, our jukebox is blue for this grand slam! :cheesy:
So, put in a quarter and choose a song from our jukebox from hell! :)

Since my fave Ferrero has already withdrawn, I'll go ahead and serve myself some alcohol to drown my sadness :(
I'll have something Spanish..hmm..
Sangria, I suppose.

Oh, I've just realized that I'll probably be in class while people come in droves in here(:(), so I'll have to rely on Scotty et al to pick up the bartending while I'm in class.

Anybody else forgot to join the Suicide Pool or was I the winner in that category? Managed to default before Day one.

Hello everyone new and old!

I hope I'm not too late to reclaim my bar stool throne. Poor Tati just can't hang anymore. So, here I am to take over, and I'm ready to party! As many of my victims friends can tell you, I'm gold in this suicide pool thing. Pick me and you will be so miserable happy you might just burst. I know I'll be seeing a lot of you all around the next 2 weeks!

Much love,

But I never went beyond about Day 3 in the women's anyway. Besides I love an excuse to drink this early in the day. Make mine a Baiey's shake, please.

Half cheeked already by Glatch and not looking too good with Isner on the men's side. I guess I just wasn't thinking clearly after dropping my son at Univ. for his freshman year (1500 miles away). Since it must have left me a little foggy for making my picks yesterday, I'll have a Moose Drool Ale.

(Maybe Glatch and Isner can be sent to the wilds of Montana where the beer hails from)

It's funny, because it was the US Open that made Oli a favorite for me. The 2004 US, 3rd round match that he played against Moya. I only (barely) knew who Oli was up to that point, and seeing him in that match, with the brilliant defense he displayed, and the "I will not fail" attitude on court totally won me over. It was a classic and beautiful Slam 5 setter, that Oli won. And I've loved him ever since.

But I saw him this spring out at PLO@IW against Daveed F. And it was obvious that Oli was not nearly the player he was in 2004.

One of the worst things ever is watching your SP pick lose in person. So, when I got to Oli's match with him just going down two sets to one, I decided to change it. Oli was a miserable mess and playing down to the level of his college-player-level opponent. So, under my strong willpower, he started using his brain a little bit, and remembered how to come to the net. And he wom a tough set. I was pretty sure the bad times were behind him, so I went to see the Opening Ceremony. Of course, while I was watching Billie Jean King do what looked like "the hustle" in the parade of champions, Oli lost.

Jack and I later went to see a bit of Darcis vs Gremelmayr and ended up being within a couple feet from Rochus. I could have taken the little guy out, but decided not, in honor of the memories from our New Haven shuttle ride (not that he recognized me). Still, it was pretty annoying that he was in a good mood after his loss. Also, Olivier is kinda rocking some love handles.

Well, he was wearing shorts and nothing else, so I rolled my eyes a couple times at his love handles, sort of in a "next time you have responsibility for my SP future, you better get in shape." Also, I've decided he owes me an i-Phone (long story, but I know he's looking to buy some anyway).

Well, he was wearing shorts and nothing else, so I rolled my eyes a couple times at his love handles, sort of in a "next time you have responsibility for my SP future, you better get in shape." Also, I've decided he owes me an i-Phone (long story, but I know he's looking to buy some anyway).

BTW, Jessie, a 6-pack of Hoegaarden for me

And I agree with nelslus these players should be able to defeat qualifiers in what is for most of them their first majors, momentum be damned.

maybe I picked the right time to use my top-14 seed strategy after all.

only problem will be by Day Six or so there might not be any top-14 seeds left on either side to choose.

Spectacular in the sense that all of us here love tennis, Amenssen. We're knowledgable fans, who can discuss unheard of to the general public players, and know who is the next star(s) long before many. And yet, more than half of us can't even pick our way out of the first round. Logically, this game should be simple as heck to play. And yet, here we are in our 4th year, and we continue to find new and exciting ways to fall flat on our collective faces.

That's why I consider it spectacular.

DAMMIT! I thought I was doing great...alive in both. Now double cheeked in both after a wonderful afternoon.

On the plus side the SP seems to bring out the most emotion of any of the contests here (so suddenly dead I guess) so at least I can relax now?

A. Bartoli, for arriving at her match today more prepared to moan and groan over her physical state than to play

B. Bammer, for deciding to play her best tennis of the year right now

C. Kuznetsova, for losing in the third round, when I planned to pick her in the pool before she would ultimately lose to Dementieva in the quarters

or D. Schnyder, who probably would have beaten Kuznetsova today had Svetlana won her 3R, so I would have been bitching about Patty anyway.

Hmm.... Maybe I need an "all of the above" option here.

While I knew it was a gamble going with him instead of Del Potro :hammerself:(and I thought about changing my pick quite a bit, which I rarely do), what was more disheartening than the loss itself was how Monfils totally crumbled emotionally and mentally after losing a first set that he had a great chance to win

Honestly, that has to be the worst performance of his I have ever seen and definitely not one I thought characteristic of him, especially from his talk after the Nalbandian match of fighting for every point  So I'm not even going to order a drink, just sit and stew in a corner so that the memory of this is still fresh the next time I decide to take a risk intead of using the sure(r) bet I'd been saving for the second week...

Thank you to people who do this. It is fun when I not listen to do do bird people. Good luck to people still alive!

Note to Room: A crossed dolphins is to be feared even more than Madame.

Alternate message: :hyst:= do do bird people.

Oh, you wanna go there? I didn't hold a gun to your head and force you to pick Gael! And you asked my advice, so don't go there! How was I supposed to know that Gael wouldn't show up and had the heart of a green bean? How soon you forget all the times you asked for my advice and I helped you get through!

Now you're on your own, Mr. Magoo... Go ahead... I look forward to seeing your Alona Bondarenko and Feliciano Lopez picks at the Australian... ;) Because you and I BOTH know that I've helped you dodge a few bullets on those fronts!

And now I'm sorry I ever explained to you what a Do Do Bird was...

Well, I'm back to work today after a couple of days at the USO. I was there on Friday and Saturday. I was knocked out of the pool by Almagro on Saturday. This is two pools in a row where I was knocked out by picking against a player I thought sucked even though they were having a hot run (Schuettler at Wimby and Muller at USO). I'll be more careful of "on form" players in the future.

Observations of the live tennis I watched.

I loved the Del Potro-Simon match. The outcome was in doubt to the very end despite Del Potro's clear physical advantage. Simon was a tireless ball retriever. It was a superb match.

I hope JW Tsonga can stay healthy. He has a big time game.

Haas-Muller was the most boring fifth set I've ever seen. They both looked uninterested. Haas had some visits from the trainer and I wonder if he was injured.

I caught the end of the fifth set with Nishikori-Ferrer. David looked like he was going to come through. It was very exciting tennis.

I understand several people from TAT avoided Querrey-Karlovic as it is boring to watch the serving match. I'd never seen Karlovic play so I dropped by for the freak factor. The set I saw was pretty ho hum.

I have never seen a player hit the ball softer than Flavio Cipolla. Wawrinka couldn't get any pace on the ball as Cipolla moonballed the forehands and sliced every backhand lightly. His first serve usually didn't hit 100. I only saw one set and had to leave. I'm glad Wawrinka finally put him away.

I was surprised at how much support Andy Murray gets in the U.S. I watched him play both singles and doubles and found him to be dour and unlikeable. Yet in the doubles match vs. Nestor-Zimonjic, I seemed to be on my own in cheering for my Canadian compatriot. I loved watching doubles.

I love the grounds at the Open though this year I was annoyed at leaving my seat in the Grandstand to go to the washroom which was in the Armstrong section and being rerouted back outside for re-entry to the Grandstand. The announcer kept saying Armstrong and Grandstand are filled to capacity but they really weren't.

Overall a great experience. Sorry I was late and only attended the TAT Tailgate for about 5 minutes.

Between Haas pickers, Almagro pickers, and Davydenko pickers, could Muller be the person to take out the most people in one SP?

Almost certain he is on the mens side, Mwoods. I have to research it later, but Bremond caused incredible carnage in our Wimby game a few years back also, and she might have the record.

But who can really complain about being taken out by Bremond? :smitten:
