Jack
06-23-2008, 09:42 PM
OK folks, here are the picks you made for You Can't Win Jack, Wimbledon 2008. I'll be passing the baton to mrjiggy, as I head over the pond and try to score me some Wimbledon tickets (my third leg of the Grand Slam!).

Good luck to all, and may your winners lose, or your losers win, or however you're supposed to cheer your picks in this thing! Thanks again to mrjiggy for grabbing the reins! :)

(Post or PM us if you see an error in picks!)

What the hell was I thinking? :o Johansson? I can't believe I picked that. I thought about taking him for the suicide pool! And as a #2 seed for the men??? I'm completely ashamed of myself. Frippin' contest schizophrenia...

As you can see, picks have been updated. I have the scores but don't quite have the time to make them look pretty yet.

Justme, Scotty, and Ibreak4coffee are tied for the lead with 19 points out of a possible 20.

Tied at 17 points are: carlitos2006, e11even, patrick, and zebra

Just noticed what a great pick David Nalbandian would have been.
He is in with a realistic shot at the wooden spoon...

After a good start....I lost 4 of my 5 this round (because they won...dammit!)

Last hope is Vadisova. Which means I may need Anna C to make the qfs later on to have a chance...GULP!

Second round was a killer for most of us in this contest. I'll be posting the scores in a while

carlitos in the lead after all of his remaining picks lost in the second round. carlitos is showing the ability to move from clay to grass coming off his T1 finish at the French Open.

Just me and e11even are tied for second with 30.

carlitos, Madame, and winston both had perfect 2nd rounds.

carlitos in the lead after all of his remaining picks lost in the second round. carlitos is showing the ability to move from clay to grass coming off his T1 finish at the French Open.

Just me and e11even are tied for second with 30.

carlitos, Madame, and winston both had perfect 2nd rounds.

I THOUGHT Carlitos had a good French Open and was beginning to repeat that here. Well done, carlitos!

Crap! Where's Tanya Harding and her crew when ya really need 'em? :(

Jack came up with this contest a couple of slams ago. It is fun. The weighted scoring makes it very important to have your #1 and #2 picks do well (eerrhhh, well in terms of this contest I mean :))

Just noticed what a great pick David Nalbandian would have been.
He is in with a realistic shot at the wooden spoon...

If Melzer beats Clement, Davydenko has a great chance to be the man!!

Tell ya what... Of the four people I've got left, they've all got a decent shot to lose next round. I may get to stick around for a bit on this one.

But this means that's I'd have to start rooting against Cilic, and at this point, I haven't a clue what I did in the bracket... Damned contest schizophrenia.

It's also going to be really hard to root against Nadia... Especially since that means my suicide pool pick for today (Azarenka) goes another round... But I guess that's not a big deal because I was kind of already throwing the dice in that direction anyway... :(

Ah, back where I belong.... in first place! :)

Unfortunately, I will probably suffer serious attrition in the 3rd round. With all the upsets, several players who I expected to be around to defeat my list of losers have made early exits. Let's see if I can hold on to my narrow lead....

Scores updated through third round.

carlitos is in command. He and e11even are the only two with four picks left. Unfortunately, for e11even, his four remaining picks are the four with the least amount of weight.

Justme edges e11even for second place at the moment.

Congrats to tinamarie for being the only player with at least three picks remaining to have a perfect third round.

Catch me if you can!

I was all set to make my victory speech, but I see that it is still possible for Ibreak4coffee and zebra to pull off a come-from-behind win. (Possibly others too, my calculations were a little hasty.) So I'll try to keep my hubris in check for a few more days.

This is really a weird game (first time I am trying it..).
Didn't like my chances in R4, but Baggie and Jankovic lost, so now looks better with Lopez and Tanasugarn for QF. But this Wimbledon is so unpredictable...

Still needs everything to go right for me, if I want to overtake you..
17 points behind, and the Lopez line could bring me 12 (would need Federer to lose in the finals..)
And a potential 6 points on the Tanasugarn line, if that goes all the way too.. (would require Venus to lose in semifinals)
Then I could get 1 point more than you have, if all goes wrong for you in the QF.
Is highly unlikely..

So I have set my hopes on making a top3 finish in this YCWJ..

Guys this is now updated through the quarters as we wait for the men to complete their semis.

Congratulations to carlitos!!:banana: He's done it again. With 57 points, nobody can catch him mathematically. We'll be gunning for him at the US Open.

Ibreak4coffee in second with 47.

Justme and zebra now tied for third at 42.

There definitely could be changes in order of finish except for first.

Nice job by PeterSkan, mmmm8, and zebra who have two choices still left through the quarter finals. We know that one of zebra's picks has been eliminated. PeterSkan will lose one of his when Nadal and Schuettler are finished. But mmmm8 could make "You Can't Win Jack" history if Safin and Nadal make the finals. She will have the chosen the ultimate loser from "each" side of the men's draw.

Did you really think you could beat me?

Whoops, that was an earlier version of my speech. :) Let's start again:

First of all, congratulations to all the contestants. As a whole, we did a pretty good job. All four of the remaining men's WS candidates are represented among our collective choices, and several people still are in the running for choosing the correct women's WS.

Thanks to mrjiggy for all the administrative work that went into this contest. And thank you to Jack for designing a contest that I'm able to do well in. (Note the medals showing up in my avatar. I still have a chance to medal in the men's SP, in which case I'll change the self-congratulatory avatar. Otherwise you're stuck with it for a while longer.)

Even though I'll be aiming to 3-peat at the US Open, I wish you all luck in the upcoming competition.

Way to go Carlitos! I'm still confused by this game. I don't understand how my #1 guy is in the chain that has Federer losing in the semis. I'm sure I didn't mean to order it that way, but I still cannot figure out how to order my players. I seem to have a brain freeze. Obviously, you know what you're doing which is why you're the repeat champion. Congrats!
