Why, I have no idea what you're talking about! ;)

Oooh! I have two picks that no one else has. I think I'm the only one who picked Errani and Makarova. Of course, now that I said that, they'll probably both win their matches. Anyone else have unique picks? Anyone pick Blake? ;)

I think there were a couple of Errani picks. It all starts running together after a while though.

The one unique pick that stood out to me was Moose's pick of Hewitt. :cheesy: No love for Lleyton!

LOL. I love that some people picked Vaidisova too. It cracks me up that there are seeded players in this game.

Oh you're right. :(

Tennisanyone and mysterx also picked her. I didn't see it when I went through by eye, but I just did the "find word" thing.

I'm still the only Makarova picker, though! I hope she has a bum knee.

What!? Who?

Chardy and Benesova had the nerve to win today! In straights no less!

Charlie02123

LOL, I guess we're supposed to talk in here instead.

Too bad about Chardy and Benesova, Aedra. I thought Benesova would win, but I was very surprised that Chardy (who?) did.

Crap. My unique pick of Makarova is uniquely biting me in the ass. She's ranked 60 places ahead of Castano, but Castano beat her 6-3 6-1 in Berlin this year, so I thought it was a good choice.

Makarova just won the first set 7-5.

Hsieh lost. And Karanusic is on his way!

rats ... was out of town for 3 days and missed the entry deadline. I think I came last at the Australian. Which meant, I guess, that I can win jack even when I'm trying not to. Or I'm lousy at picking losers. Or something. Hopefully that's a reflection of my good nature heheheheh

Anyway, I'm sorry for missing this one, and I wish all the contestants do as poorly as they hope to.

Or something like that.

Yay...all my picks have lost so far (too bad they are all #3 or #4s though!) Including one woman I haven't heard of losing to another woman I hadn't heard of.

Unfortunately I now have to cheer for Andy Murray in his next match (since my new guy faces him) but the cool thing about this is you only cheer for them for one match.

Jack, question. I chose Gasquet who had the nerve to wait until th 11th hour to withdraw from the tournament. I assume this means that I can't score any points for him? I don't know if there's a precedent for this having happened before or not (in the one time this contest has been held before this one ), so I'm just curious. Obviously since he didn't play, I'm fine with the judgment that he just gets thrown out altogether.

Omigod, I was just checking my team and found out that Fognini decided to withdraw the day before the tournament, too. I picked a good weekend to go out of town, I guess.

You're correct, there is no precedent for this, but I would say the fairest way to handle is to replace the Gasquet pick with the LL who replaced him, Giraldo. (So your 2nd round player is still Serra, and so forth through later rounds.) This is the method typically used in any prediction contest (Racket Bracket, for instance), and it makes sense applied to YCWJ also.

In fact...this would be lucky...getting a LL as a replacement would in theory increase your chance of you guy losing, which therefore advances you! It would be worse to have your pick's opponent withdraw.

True. Picking a player who is already wavering about whether or not to play was part of strategy for that pick. When Florent Serra wins his next match, it'll be all for nought anyways... ;)

Good. Because my #1 mens pick was the (not so) great Florian Mayer, who was also replaced by a LL.

Here are the scores after the first round of play. A wide range, from a perfect score (nice going, m8) to a... less than perfect score (sorry Moose :lipsrsealed:).

Still bunched up at the top, and anyone's contest. But I bet you never had so much riding on Petra Kvitova before.

(Thanks to mr jiggy for catching my scoring errors!!)

Out of my people remaining: Junqueira plays Ljubicic next. Eek! I didn't think I would ever be rooting for Ivan again. Hernandez lost to Mathieu today. Mathieu plays Schwank next and is probably a huge favorite :(. Acasuso lost to Murray today. Murray is up against Almagro next. Dulko is at 3-3 in the third against Cornet. The winner (hopefully Alize!) plays Radwanska. Dechy plays Dellacqua next (they've never played before). King plays Kuznetsova next.

Yay...my #1 man lives on, as does my #4. Weird in a contest trying to lose I now have Stepanek and Murray, but that's how it works! Looks like my Murray pick will die soon with Nalby's upset...this round or next. Loving the Stepanek pick if Koyla can beat Ferrer if they meet up.

Only my #4 woman left though. But she lost to Cetkosova who next plays Benesova. If Cetkosova loses that I see it opening up nicely.

I checked my people. I have three left. My new picks are Almagro, Radwanska, and Suarez Navarro. I actually don't want Almagro to lose because of other contests, but I am pleased that Radwanska and Suarez Navarro are pretty big underdogs. If they both lose, their conquerers will play each other in the quarters (Jankovic and Pennetta), so I would have someone in the semis for sure! That would be excited. If that happened, I would win if Ivanovic were the runner up.

No, no, no. You got it wrong. I thought Monfils to lose to Ferrer to lose to GONZALEZ to lose to Rafa ;)
Looking bad for Roger right now.

I hadn't realized I was the only one to pick Lisnard. Anyway, even if Fed loses it seems Gonzo is playing good tennis, so he could beat Ferrer.

Cool! Not only did I tie for most fourth round points, I just realized that both of my picks unexpectedly lost (that is, won for me) today. Remaining wooden spoon possibilites - based on who LOSES final (winner doesn't matter since there is no next round)

Men:

Federer - Viktor Triocki
Monfils - Dudi Sela
Djokovic - Sergio Roitman
Nadal - Josselin Ouanna

Women:

Safina - Elena Vesnina
Kuznetsova - Yanina Wickmayer
Jankovic - Camille Pin
Ivanvoic - Stephanie Dubois

Maybe Camille Pin really is money...for getting the wooden spoon!

Interesting that both Williams sisters are still possibly part of the Wooden Spoon chain.

:(

Aedra and I had a good run.

Yeah we did. Losing 3 people in R2 cost me.

I still need to be reminded to click on the points total category. I get all excited for about 2 seconds.

We're down to 2 contenders... Madame has a two point lead through the QF matches, but carlitos can still tie her if Federer loses the final!

As is typical for me, I was travelling for work during the second week of RG. Imagine my surprise coming back home today to find that I have a chance to tie for the win! This definitely makes up for being DQ'ed from the Suicide Pools!

Thank you, Jack, for organizing this competition, and thanks to mrjiggy for helping to run it!

Thanks carlitos, and great job in the contest. You and Madame have shown the ability to pick the biggest losers! :)

It must have taken Jack several hours to put the contest together and especially to keep score during the first few rounds. Great job by him!

I am crossing my fingers ....

I want Rafa to win, even if carlitos beats me at SP.

I was so lucky at the game here, last time I lost all my losers in the first two rounds !!!

So is Madame better at picking losers or winners ?
we shall soon know :cheesy:

great fun anyway. I love in this contest the other point of view on the low ranked journeymen and women of the circuit. Power is in losing too.

As we head into the finals, it's down to -

Men's Wooden Spoon
Troicki (if Nadal wins)
Ouanna (if Federer wins)
There are eight Troicki pickers: AceHole, aedra, carlitos, Drop Shot, Madame, martini4me, mr. jiggy, and munchin. The only Ouanna picker was beaujarkko.

Women's Wooden Spoon
Vesnina (if Ivanovic wins)
Dubois (if Safina wins)
The only one still in the running here is munchin, who picked Vesnina.

With only the finals left to be played...
Madame still leads carlitos by one point, and both have their Troicki pick remaining. But carlitos had Troicki as his first selection, Madame had him as her second pick, so it's a tie at the top if Nadal wins the title.

Win-win situation for me. I'm a Federer fan, so I'll be very happy if he completes the career GS tomorrow. But if he loses to Nadal (as is very likely), then I can finally claim victory in a TAT competition!

I don't mind tying for first, as long as I'm first :cheesy: And I need Rafa to win for my predictions.

So Vamos Rafa !!!!

and congrats carlito for doing as well as me

So, Federer loses and I tie Madame for first place! Is YCWJ a medal event? Meaning, will we get medals or just bragging rights?

It's not a medal event, carlitos, but bragging rights are worth their weight in gold around here ;)

No medals for this one yet, carlitos. Sorry. But bragging rights are the most important reward!

Congrats again to Madame who can not only pick winners (predictions) but the biggest losers (you can't win Jack), as well!

Congrats to Carlitos for winning/tying this contest. I love your avatar. That's another way to get a medal on this board! :cheesy:

Thanks Jack for such a fun contest. This was my first time playing, but I'm looking forward to playing it again if i can.
